I could hardly wait to share my collaboration with a fabulous new shoe company, Cecelia New York. The company, which debuted in 2013, features shoes crafted from Italian leathers and other luxurious materials, so they couldn’t be more fitting for me to wear around Rome. Since I love all things exotic print, this snakeskin pair naturally caught my eye first. They were the perfect match for these track pants and instantly added eye-catching texture to my outfit. If you’re in the market for a unique pair of shoes, or just enjoy wearing beautiful footwear, I definitely suggest checking them out at www.cecelianewyork.com. You can also receive 10% off your order by using my code: MODA10 (expires one week from today, 3/12/15). Happy shopping!

In other news, I made big progress today, guys! My husband jokingly said earlier this week that it was time to “push me out of the nest” (ha!) Admittedly, I do tend to rely on him a lot when we are out together because he took six months of intensive language training before we moved. Every time I hear him talking with Italians, I am blown away by how fluently he speaks. I can speak a little Italian, but I am by no means at the point of being able to communicate smoothly. The phrase I’ve used most often so far, and one that always gets a chuckle, is “Mi spiace, mi Italiano e pessimo’ (I’m sorry, my Italian is awful). This was the first day I walked further than a few blocks away from our apartment by myself. It was rainy and cool, so I made my first stop at Bar Tagliamento for a cappucino and another new type of pastry. I tried making small talk with the barista, and we were both having a pretty hard time understanding each other until I was paying for my coffee and I pointed up at the speaker and said, “Musica americana–Kesha!” to which he said, “Si!” and turned it up before doing a little dance. I’ve noticed that everywhere I go, the Italian radio stations play local music sprinkled with American hits.

After the bar, I wandered the streets, popping in and out of a few stores to see what was available until making my final stop at the supermercato. I never thought I would enjoy grocery shopping, but it’s been nice to have the time to walk to the store and pick up what I need for dinner on a daily basis rather than planning out meals for one big weekly trip. The food is amazingly fresh, too–so fresh that milk expires less than a week from the purchase date and bread gets moldy within a few days. Since product packaging is a lot smaller and Italian food doesn’t have nearly as many preservatives, it only makes sense to shop more often anyway. Today may have been baby steps, but I’m getting more familiar with the city every day and my husband says pretty soon I’ll be zipping along the busy streets in a Vespa!
