What is Kazakhstan?

That’s what I thought when we first considered moving there. In the United States, most people you meet won’t know anything about this unique country. Now that we’ve lived in Astana for two years, I can say what it means to me…

It’s six months of winter! It’s a place with brutal winter cold but hot summer days. It’s a city where life is spent outside, even in winter. It’s a hot cup of tea with every meal - and where meat is always the most important part of the meal. It’s a place where real fur is embraced for its warmth and natural beauty. It’s a white Christmas every December. It’s where children play outside until 10:00 P.M. (or later). It’s the dombra as the national instrument. It’s constant traffic and speed bumps everywhere. It’s where the sun rises before 4:00 A.M. in the summer - and not until 9:00 A.M. in winter. It’s the teachers at my children’s school who loved our daughters like family. It’s where family means everything. It’s the place where nearly every local I met told me they love the United States. It’s the city we were lucky to call home for two years.
